Chael Sonnen tests positive for banned substance after UFC 117

I admit I was worried about hearing another few months of rants from Chael about how he will destroy Anderson Silva. Now it seems like I won’t have to hear about it for awhile. I wonder how this will affect his political aspirations. The following is from Sherdog.com

UFC Contender Chael Sonnen

Originally reported by Sherdog.com’s Greg Savage

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, UFC Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has been notified that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs following his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva.

The event, held at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, drew nearly 13,000 fans live to see the main event, which featured the much-anticipated bout between Sonnen and Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship

Sonnen, who shockingly dominated most of the fight, was eventually submitted by Silva in the final minutes of the fifth round, but gained much respect from the MMA community.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com on Saturday night.

Dodd did not state which substance was found in the test, but did mention that all fighters had passed their drugs-of-abuse scan, meaning that Sonnen has failed the test for a performance-enhancing substance.

If Sonnen elects not to appeal his suspension, he is looking at a long suspension. Similar cases involving UFC stars Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, who both tested positive for PEDs, resulted in both fighters being suspended for a period of one year with hefty fines.

If Sonnen does elect to appeal his suspension and can tell a convincing tale, he could see his suspension dropped similarly to Sherk’s, who ended up serving only a six-month suspension.

With the UFC trying to prove its superiority of athletes over other sports, positive PED tests from main event fighters cannot be looked upon favorably by management.

Sonnen was considered by many to be deserving of a rematch following his UFC 117 performance, which was by far the closest fight of Anderson Silva’s UFC career, but it looks as if the rematch will have to wait.

UFC Undisputed 2010 – Game of the year?

May 18, 2010
By

On May 25, it will be time once again for all MMA fans to break their piggy banks and head to their local game outlet. Last year the 2009 edition of the UFC franchise set records for sales and gameplay.  The 2010 version seems to have improved apon every aspect of the game, from fighter design, to game play right down to the venues you can fight at. Some of the biggest improvements are the addition of southpaws, karate, greco-roman wrestling and sambo fight styles. There will be after fight clothes as well as the ability to start your own on line fight camp. The PS3 edition will include 3 legendary fighters (Dan Severn,Royce Gracie and Jens Pulver) that won’t be available for the X-box edition as well as a blu ray featuring several high profile fights. There are also downloadable fighters from the TUF season 10 cast (James McSweeney, Marcus Jones, Ron Nelson and Brenden Schaub) that are available for both consoles. This year there’s also a much expanded list of fighters in all five of the UFC’s weight classes.
Now we at Rings Radio have already downloaded the free demo of the game and so far have nothing but positive reviews. Shooter has bith the X-box and PS3 versions and claims that the controls are a bit smoother on the PS3 version. Both versions offer all the same abilites as last year plus the ability to use the cage to trap your opponant as well as some much more diverse striking thats based on the type of fighter youre using. The game’s controls may take a little time to fully master but the tutorial mode is a big help in mastering gameplay. Also there’s a change in gameplay including a redesign of clinch and ground grappling, as well as an improved career mode, starting in the World Fighting Alliance.
All in all we have to believe that this is perhaps one of the most anticipated games of the year. Be sure to get your copy as they’re sure to sell out.
